Crowns
What are crowns?
A crown, or commonly referred to as caps, is a restoration that covers the majority of a tooth. When a tooth is broken down to a certain point that cannot adequately hold a dental filling, crowns are necessary.
In order to restore a tooth with a crown, the tooth is first shaped to allow enough space for the new material to cover the tooth. Often, a tooth may require a buildup due to the insufficient tooth structure. Impressions of the teeth and gum are taken and sent to the lab for fabrication. A temporary crown is made to cover the tooth until the permanent crown comes back from the lab. The permanent crown is cemented on the next visit.
What are some common materials for crowns?
The older materials of crowns are metallic or gold in color (gold, stainless steel, metal alloys). With the advancement of porcelain and other dental materials, crowns can be very strong, aesthetic and tooth-like.
